Is e-learning the future, or are we automating the process of education? Will it eliminate the function of the teacher by replacing it with a facilitator?

I have only experienced e-learning as a student at University. We have been using it to one extent or another for all three years of the course I am currently on but this year our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) has been upgraded and now our tutors are using it for a lot of things. In some cases this is really helpful because lecture notes and secondary reading go onto the database. However, in other ways it is a really irritating innovation because some tutors, and certainly the faculty, have become too dependent on the software to the extent that the only way we can find out coursework deadlines and other crucial information is through the web service. So they are a blessing and a curse, on the one hand a useful tool on the other a crutch for poor administrative services.
